“Excuse me, I look a right state”

The starting phrase to most video calls, despite having spent the previous 30 minutes tidying up stuff in the background and making ourselves presentable.  Hair and makeup done, significant thought put in to what we’re wearing so we look professional.

It’s a lot of hassle, and for what?  Do we really need to see who we’re talking to?

Video calling has become very fashionable over the last few weeks.  Services such as Zoom and Teams have seen huge increases in demand for commercial use.  Whatsapp, Facetime and Houseparty have seen the same for more personal contact.

But, what’s happened to the simple telephone call?

The forgotten cousin.  A simple telephone is still an effective tool.  For a start you don’t need to worry about your appearance…

The technology behind it is more robust.  How many times have you been on a video call when the picture has frozen or the call drops out?  Mobiles and Landlines suffer from this far less.

You don’t need to consider having the right software installed and security is much less of an issue, recent news reports of significant intrusions into privacy are nullified too.  You can reach almost anyone with just the tap of a few numbers.

We’re all trying to communicate with each other more whilst on lockdown so don’t forget the benefits of the humble telephone, it’s the easier way to communicate.
